Sales of Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” have surged since Donald Trump’s election. The book, first published in 1985, depicts a regressive fundamentalist society, committed to the subjugation of women. Atwood tells The New Yorker’s Rebecca Mead, “As far as I was concerned I reflected the world that already existed.”
